Silk Butterfly Silk Butterfly Throw

I designed these throws for one of my customers who likes butterflies. The above throw is knitted in an industrial fine acrylic yarn in a full needle rib. I bought the fringe from one of the knitting shows and then hand painted a length of silk to match the pink, purple, orange and green. I then made 22 appliqué butterflies with padded bodies in 4 different shapes. I used a clever technique which allowed me to attach the butterflies by the body only, leaving the wings to "flap". This is described in detail in my book "Sewing Sampler"

Lace Butterfly Close UpLace Butterfly Throw

This throw is knitted in an industrial 4 ply yarn with a viscose thread running through which gives a bit of sparkle. It was designed using Designaknit and knitted on my 950i. I began with a mesh lace background and overlaid butterfly shapes in stocking stitch. I then added a few lace flower details on the wings. After pressing, I used my sewing machine to couch silver yarn round the butterfly and create antennae. The frill was knitted on my pink Passap and steamed very carefully into evenly placed gathers. Gold trim was added to trim the outer edge and hide the join between the throw and the frill.
