Romeo
A cold water soluble stabiliser useful for buttonholes and embroidery on knitwear. I sell small pieces 20cm x 45cm £1 which will be plenty for hundreds of buttonholes and good for small embroidery pieces. Includes instructions.
When making buttonhole with the sewing machine on knitwear use layer of Romeo as a stabiliser.
Cut a small piece and place either on top of your work before making the buttonhole.
After you finish your buttonhole, you'll find you can tear away the excess very easily. The rest will come out in the first wash. Don't cut a small piece for each buttonhole - just place a large piece over your work, make your buttonhole, tear off and repeat, using areas close together, so you waste as little as possible.
Use a layer of Romeo on the top and underneath. This prevents the embroidery stitches sinking into the knitting. Tear off the excess afterwards. The rest will disappear with the first wash.

If your knitting is fine or see through and you need a bit more permanent body to balance the weight of the embroidery, then iron on some fusible nylon on the back first. Use one layer of Romeo on the top only. Tear off the excess afterwards. The rest will disappear with the first wash.

When you have used all the available useful area on the Romeo, put all the scraps in a jam jar with a tiny amount of water. It will dissolve and produce a gloopy solution which you can paint onto your work instead. Wait until it dries when it will stiffen the fabric or knitting. Wash out later as normal.
